Everyone
can compete. Anyone can win!

New nail competition encourages all levels of competition
with three divisions. All participants
take home a plaque.
LOS ANGELES. February 20, 2001 --- At a time when major trade shows are
eliminating nail
competitions
altogether, The Nailympics defies the trend with a multiple division nail
competition for everyone from beginners to veteran
competitors. The first Nailympics will be
held June 10-11, 2001, at the Hair & Nail Conference at
the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Designed to encourage nail technicians to challenge
themselves and their skills, the show
sponsors are creating an atmosphere that calls to mind the
camaraderie and competitive spirit of
the traditional Olympic Village.
“Too often nail technicians are intimidated to compete
because they don’t feel they can pit their
skills against the big names in the competition world,”
explains David Daniel, president of EZ
Flow (Stanton, CA),
a Nailympics Sponsor. “We wanted to create a competition event that
was different from all the others and that offered everyone
a fair chance to take home a trophy.”
The principals from the original three companies that
conceived of The Nailympics – EZ Flow,
IBD, Too Much Fun – decided on four competition categories,
with three divisions in each.
Division 1 is for students or newcomers who have never
competed, Division 2 is for nail
technicians that have never placed in a nail competition,
and Division 3 is for competitors who
have placed in a competition or who are ranked by NAILS
Magazine as a Top Competitor.
In another break-with-tradition move, The Nailympics will
offer competitions in Gels, an
infrequently offered
competition category, but a service that continues to gain popularity in the
U.S. & in
Europe. “As an industry we keep telling technicians they need to expand their
service
offerings, try new services, but there aren’t any
competitions in these categories for the techs who
are getting good at it. So that’s why we’re offering gels
and airbrushing, for example. Eventually
we’re going to add other categories like wraps, design
acrylics & spa manicures,” explains Lee
Tomlinson of IBD (Gardena, CA).
Jin Johnson, president of Too Much Fun (Mission Viejo, CA),
and one of the original sponsors,
says, “We want nail technicians to fall back in love with
this industry. That’s our motto: To
promote professionalism and love of the nail industry. So
everything we’re doing is focused on
this being FUN: the
atmosphere in the competition arena is going to be high energy, we’re going
to make the awards presentation more fun than this industry
has ever seen. And everyone who
puts their skills to the test is going to take home a plaque
to hand on their wall that says, ‘I
competed!’”
The first Nailympics debuts at the Las Vegas Hair & Nail
Conference in Las Vegas at the Las
Vegas Convention Center on June 10-11, 2001. As part of the
competition registration fee, nail technicians also get free
entry onto the show floor for themselves
& their models, as well as receive a goodie bag stuffed
with product samples & literature.
